Let your hair down
"Let your hair down" is an installation created for the Contemporary Garage, a gallery space run by OpenART.
We wear our personal history on our head. Information about who we are and how we have been is stored in the DNA in our hair, together with characteristics we inherited from our descendants. We alter these characteristics to our liking to communicate the way we see ourselves, how we want to be or where we belong. We are continuously growing and we shape our appearance to the changes we go through. We might at some point decide to cut all ties to leave the past behind, or to conform ourselves to the way life shapes us.
If you look closely you might see these stories of becoming and reflecting in hair. The language is based on the outcome of constant adding, removing and letting be. Sometimes we need an interpreter, sometimes we can manage on our own if not always. Others might need to know what was before to read the current state, but they will always read something, though it may be not always what you were trying to say.
